Bubbles, Inc.
Found on card backs throughout
the 50's and 60's, this would be the name that Topps
would put on cards to distance
the Topps brand name from any anticipated negative
reaction. "Mars Attacks"
cards and "The Outer Limits" cards are two examples of
card sets where Topps employed
the Bubbles, Inc. name.
Cancellation Stamp
See "Bonus Card"
Cello Pack
A clear cellophane wrapper
placed around cards for retail sale. More often than not,
cello wrappers contained
no text or graphics. Have very low collector value.
Hobby Card Set
A set of cards sold in "complete
set" form as opposed to being released in "pack"
form.
Nrmt
A card grading term meaning
"near mint". A high grade card.
Short Print
For some card sets, the
company might produce and/or release lesser amounts of
certain card numbers in
order to stimulate sales. To complete a card set, collectors
would be obligated to continue
buying packs in search of the elusive numbers.
T.C.G.
"Topps Chewing Gum". This
credit can be found on the backs of many Topps
produced cards.
Test Issue
A card set which (at the
time) received limited distribution in certain "test areas" in
order to determine the selling
power of the set. If the set was deemed a success in
test market, it would then
go into general release. If it failed, the set would be pulled
(and trashed). This accounts
for some cards' limited availability such as "Land of
the Giants" or "Flash Gordon".
Trading Card Set
Collector cards distributed
in "pack" form. Usually, their would be 24-36 packs in a
retail box of cards.
Wax Pack
A standard retail pack of
cards which would show the title of the card set and perhaps
several graphics. Throughout
the 60's, a typical Topps wax pack might contain 5-10
cards and a stick of gum.
